Widespread thunderstorms expected

Weather warning mapThunderstorm warnings are in place across the UK and Ireland on Sunday.

Weather warnings are in effect for Sunday, with thunderstorms expected across both the UK and Ireland.

The day begins with patches of rain hanging over northern England, these spread through the morning before the first thunderstorms begin to bubble up from midday in northern England, northeast of Blackpool.

Storms become more widespread as the afternoon wears on, with pockets of very heavy rainfall expected in the English Midlands and northwest.

From around the late afternoon many of the original systems start to disperse in the UK, but for Ireland the day is just starting.

As evening approaches, widespread thunderstorms are likely, accompanied by further pockets of heavy rain across central areas.

By Monday morning, the weather warnings have been lifted, although there is still plenty of heavy rain in the forecast for the start of the week.
