The Atlantic has been ramping up with the development of Tropical Storms Calvin and Don in recent days.

Calvin

Hawaii was just impacted by Tropical Storm Calvin, which has now dissipated in the eastern Pacific. At the same time, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake also hit the Big Island.

Tropical Storm Calvin passed south of the Big Island on Wednesday 19th July. Due to gusty winds and heavy rainfall, roads and passages were closed in the mountains and flood warnings were in effect.

More than 150 mm of rain piled up as Calvin tracked by, which likely helped the abnormally dry drought conditions on the eastern portions of the Big Island. No tropical activity is expected over the next week in the east Pacific.

Don

Tropical Storm Don has been meandering around the Atlantic for a while now and it will spend the weekend of the 21st July drifting northwest, before weakening into a tropical depression as it enters cooler waters.

Tropical Storm Don has no threat to land but could disrupt fishing and other seafaring vessels as it stays out to sea. We could see some strengthening to Don over the next 24 to 36 hours, but hurricane strength (at least 74 mph winds) is not expected.

To the south of Don however, is a disturbance that has rolled off the northwest coast of Africa and is churning southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.

In the short term, it will collide with dry air, not conducive for strengthening, but development is possible over the next week.

A strong Bermuda High pressure in the central north Atlantic will help this cluster of showers and thunderstorms move west toward the Lesser Antilles over the next 7 days.
