Cyclone Arnab makes landfall in India

The weather on India’s east coast is currently causing quite a stir. Cyclone Arnab made landfall this morning, bringing gale-force winds.

Almost 100,000 people had previously been evacuated ahead of the system making landfall.

There has already been widespread storm damage and power cuts. There is also a high risk of flooding, as the cyclone is bringing not only strong winds but also torrential rain. In some areas, over 300 mm of rain could fall within a short space of time.

Over the next few days, Arnab will gradually weaken and move northwards towards the Himalayas. There, heavy rain is likely to cause landslides and mudslides. Heavy snow is falling at high altitudes.
