Autumn storms sweep across Europe

Severe autumn storms swept across parts of Europe at the weekend. They caused extensive damage, particularly here in the UK and Ireland.

However, the storms also caused massive damage and disruption to transport in Germany, France and the Benelux countries.

A full-blown hurricane raged across the North Sea on Sunday.

In the UK, tens of thousands of households were without electricity for hours. Fallen trees toppled power lines and blocked roads and rail links. Two people passed away after being hit by falling trees.

There were also power cuts in other parts of Europe, along with widespread disruption to transport in some areas. Airports were forced to cancel numerous flights.

On the North Sea, many ferry services were suspended temporarily due to gale-force winds. But even the harbours were not safe: in Bremerhaven, Germany, a cruise ship collided with a container ship on Sunday as a result of the gales. This resulted in considerable damage to property.
