Fiona floods and Ian's imminent impacts

Hurricane Ian on the WeatherRadar

Fiona struck Canada as the most intense storm on record, whilst Ian is due to become a Major Hurricane as it barrels towards Cuba.

Ian

Hurricane Ian, previously Tropical Depression Nine, has now strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, with sustained winds of 75mph.

Ian is the 4th hurricane of the 2022 season, with sights set on western Cuba before hitting Florida.

Rapid intensification into a Major Hurricane is expected through today, which by definition of the National Hurricane Center, is when winds increase by at least 35mph within 24hrs.

This is anticipated prior to landfall in both Cuba and Florida. Life threatening storm surge and damaging winds are expected for Cuba, followed by heavy rainfall for west coast of Florida and the Florida Panhandle by the middle of the week.

Fiona

Fiona was officially the most intense storm to strike Canada on record, with a pressure of 932.6 hPa recorded from its core during landfall on Hart Island, Nova Scotia.

Fiona left a trail of devastation with severe flooding as coastal homes collapsed and over 400,000 people in Atlantic Canada left without power.

The post-tropical storm is now pumping heat and tropical moisture into Greenland and Iceland, producing record warm temperatures here. 24.1C was observed in Dalatangi, eastern Iceland on September 24th.

As consequence of all this moisture, heavy rains have washed away a bridge away near the Kobbefjord research station in Greenland, near Nuuk.
