Record in Spain
Third warmest April on record

The map shows temperature anomalies in April, with positive values in Western Europe and negative values in Eastern Europe.

Record-breaking ocean temperatures, marine heatwaves, and extreme weather conditions worldwide: April 2026 demonstrates once again just how drastically the climate is changing.

There were significant temperature variations across Europe in April. Whilst well above-average temperatures were recorded across much of south-western Europe, it was exceptionally cold in Eastern Europe.

Spain even recorded its warmest April since records began. Temperatures were also well above average in other parts of south-western Europe. Globally, it was the third-warmest April since records began. Record temperatures were even recorded across large parts of the tropical Pacific.

Extreme weather events

The month was also marked by extreme weather events, including floods in the Middle East, droughts in southern Africa, and tropical cyclones in the Pacific.

Flash floods hit parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Some regions of Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and Syria also experienced flooding and landslides.

In the Arctic, the average sea ice extent in April was around five per cent below the average. This made it the second-lowest ever recorded in April
