Storm Darragh grows through the day

Storm Darragh first reaches Ireland this afternoon with wider impacts in the evening.

Today's weather picture is dominated by the arrival of Storm Darragh later this afternoon.

Kickstarting your morning

Welcome to the Breakfast Brief, providing your first forecast of the day and a chance to catch on what you may have missed.

Weather outlook

First, the day begins widely dry outside south-west Ireland. Though some brisk winds will already be noticeable across eastern England, remnants from Thursday's weather system.

By midday, Darragh begins to be felt in Ireland, initially with the arrival of heavy rains and later in the evening with gale-force winds which could reach up to 70 mph in the south-west.

In the UK, Darragh does bring strong winds by midnight, around 60 mph in Cardiff, but the rain will be felt first. This may turn to snow showers over the higher altitudes of the Highlands. Spreading east from the early afternoon, with more significant impacts overnight, into Saturday, from the rain and gales.
