Over the weekend, shimmering noctilucent clouds, a staple of the summer season, were spotted shining over parts of the UK.

Pictured over West Yorkshire, these clouds form around 50 miles above the surface of the planet. Appearing as shining ribbons of blue and silver clouds.

In actual fact, they are collections of ice crystals and dust reflecting the last of the day's sunlight from behind the horizon.
