Northern lights
Fascinating show in Iceland

Stunning aurora borealis have been spotted in the north of Iceland in recent days.

With aurora season underway, as of September, a magical light display has already been witnessed under the skies of northern Iceland, near Norðurland vestra, Höskuldsstaðir, on the 15th of the month.

Solar activity in recent weeks has remained high, which has allowed the observation of both the traditional green auroras, but also the much rarer red auroras. Below is a selection of shots from the last few days.

Places like Iceland and Scandinavia, in addition to Canada and Alaska are common viewing grounds of the aurora borealis, but can also be found in the southern hemisphere too, where they are termed aurora australis.

Getting to see the aurora borealis, or northern lights, becomes difficult for the UK and Ireland, due to both our latitude and light pollution, though occasionally, in big geomagnetic storms, they can dive far enough southwards. However viewing conditions are also hugely reliant on cloud cover, which you can keep an eye on through our WeatherRadar.
