January gardening tips
Pruning time for trees

pruning

The first round of gardening work is already due this month. Some trees and shrubs benefit from targeted pruning during the cold season.

Whether apple tree, pear tree or quince - many fruit trees look forward to a trim in January. Cover shrubs can also be pruned now and shortened to 30 cm above the ground.

Winter pruning contributes significantly to the flowering of certain trees and shrubs. In addition, cutting back dead or diseased branches strengthens the health of the plants and promotes better ventilation and sunlight supply.

Advantages of winter pruning

In winter, some plants in the garden can be pruned back without being damaged. This is because they are in what is known as dormancy.

But be careful: even though pruning in January is winter pruning, it must not be too cold. The shears should not be used in sub-zero temperatures and frost. It should also not be too damp.

Throughout this weekend, however, we can expect plenty of sunshine as temperatures remain above-average, as can be seen on both the WeatherRadar above, and the TemperatureRadar.
