On Wednesday and Thursday evening, violent thunderstorms swept across the region. The city of Barcelona, popular with tourists, was affected.

WeatherRadar: Severe thunderstorms hit north-eastern Spain Wednesday night into Thursday.

The storms brought heavy rain, gusts of wind, hail, and countless lightning strikes. In some places, more than 60 litres of rain fell per square metre in a short period of time.

The water levels of some rivers and reservoirs rose sharply as a result.
