Great visibility for most
Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak

One of the year's most active meteor showers is set to peak tonight, with broadly clear skies across the UK but tricker visibility in Ireland.

The Perseids can produce up to 100 meteors an hour on particularly active years. Tonight, the peak of the shower runs from midnight to around 05:30 am.

The shooting stars flying above are actually debris from the Comet Swift-Tuttle which Earth passes through each year.

The outlook for midnight tonight shows clear skies for most of the UK, though with some cloud cover in parts, particularly in Wales.

For Ireland, it will be harder to spot the meteors with rain pushing in from the Atlantic. Check the WeatherRadar to find cloudless areas away from light pollution.

To easily find the radiant point for the shower, use a stargazing app to locate the Perseus constellation. The meteors will primarily appear from this area, and the shower is named after the constellation.
