Exceptionally low tide in Venice

An exceptionally low tide is currently affecting the Venetian lagoon. On Sunday it fell 66cm relative to the average sea level.

The low level was reached on Sunday 19th February at around 4:30 pm, measuring a level of 66 cm below their mean sea level.

Many canals ran dry, though the seagulls took advantage of this to stock up on fish, which were made more vulnerable by the low water level.

Some inconvenience to navigation was reported, especially by gondoliers who were forced to divert their regular routes to avoid the shallows.

The footage above shows the banks of the Grand Canal in the Rialto area, where the seabed is visible in several places, especially at the gondola landings. Various random objects resurfaced too, including cutlery and plates.
