Rain deficit at home, deluge in Spain

Rainfall anomalies show a drier month for the UK and Ireland while Spain see downpours.

The UK and Ireland have seen a deficit in average rainfall so far in March, but the Iberian Peninsula is experiencing heavy downpours.

With a drier month at home, it is further south that the rain arrives. Severe flooding have impacted Spain for weeks, with evacuations taking place on March 21st as Storm Martinho delivered the latest deluge.

The regular rain has left saturated soil, making floods more likely with each event. Reservoirs across the country are at their highest levels for three years.

For now, the rain has stopped for Spain, though from Thursday afternoon it turns wetter for the UK and Ireland with a band of heavier rain passing over.
