Winter returns in Italy
Heavy snowfall south of the Alps

Winter is refusing to leave parts of Europe, with snowfall returning on the southern side of the Alps.

The amounts of fresh snow are particularly high in northern Italy and southern Switzerland after heavy snow this weekend. But there is also turbulent weather in other countries on the Mediterranean.

Not far from the border with France, heavy snowfall started at the weekend and delivered copious amounts of fresh snow closer to the Italian Alps.

In Ceresole Reale, an Italian commune close to the French border, footage shows cars almost disappearing in the masses of snow and having to be laboriously shovelled out while snow blowers are being used to ease the burden.

In recent weeks, the southern side of the Alps has repeatedly seen large amounts of snow and rain. Switzerland is also affected again by the return of snow.

Further west in Spain, it is also snowing in parts of the country. Snow was falling on Sunday in both the north and south-east. In some places, the snow line is only 1000 metres above sea level or even lower.

The reason for the heavy snowfall is a low pressure system over the northern Mediterranean. In addition to snow, the low pressure system is also bringing heavy rain and even thunderstorms to Italy.
