Weather trend - Unsettled with wet and windy spells for most

Unsettled and at times windy weather is expected throughout most of the week as Atlantic systems dominate the picture.

Tuesday will be a mixed bag for most with blustery showers as well as some drier, sunnier interludes.

The best day of the week in terms of sunshine and longer dry periods may well be Wednesday thanks to a weak ridge of high pressure.

This won't last long though as a new low will push into Ireland, Wales and southern England Wednesday night, bringing more widespread rain there.

While the exact track and intensity are still a bit unclear, this new low could develop into a stronger system on Thursday, potentially bringing strong winds and coastal gales.

The showery, windy conditions remain in place on Friday, whilst winds may slowly shift to a more northwesterly direction.

Temperatures are likely to drop to just below average by the weekend as we keep a very unsettled, showery northwest air stream.

It could even get cold enough for some sleet or wet snow over higher ground in Scotland on Saturday.

The changeable and cool weather is expected to continue at the beginning of next week.
