How does fog form?

Cars drive through fog

At this time of the year, conditions are ripe for fog to form, especially affecting our morning commute, do you know how it forms?

Winter is the perfect time for fog to develop, especially in periods of calm weather with weaker winds allowing dense fog to settle for days at a time.

To learn more on exactly how and why fog forms, check out our Weather Explained video:

There are actually five different types of fog that form in slightly unique ways. Cloud cover, wind speeds, temperature, moisture levels, and daylight hours all play a role.

Despite so many weather warnings recently, because of the many factors involved forecasting the arrival of fog is actually quite tricky. If just one aspect of the development is out of sync fog is unlikely to form.
