Thunderstorms claim lives
Devastating flash floods in Italy

Torrential rains have left chaos in parts of Italy, with severe flash flooding and several fatalities.

On September 15th, the regions of Umbria, Marche and Campania in the east of Italy were affected by heavy thunderstorms, including the Amalfi Coast and the port city of Ancona. The devastating flash flooding led to at least seven fatalities, with some still reported missing.

Up to 420mm of rain fell within just a few hours, with water subsequently building up to a metre high on some streets, reaching the first floor of many houses.

Rivers are also bursting at the seams, causing some bridges to collapse and several houses and businesses to be destroyed. Many areas have also been left without electricity for hours.

Strong torrents swept away cars, and whilst rescue aids soon brought residents to safety, streets were left covered in a thick layer of mud.

A renewed risk of storms

Further powerful thunderstorms will threaten the area on Friday night, September 16th, into Saturday daytime, September 17th as they track southwards, as seen on the WeatherRadar animation below.

Rainfall totals could reach a further 150 to 200mm in some regions, perhaps locally more. As a result, further severe flooding and landslides are expected, including a risk of tornadoes and large hailstorms.

Among other things, the unusually high water temperatures in the Mediterranean are largely responsible for the severe storms.
