The Mpemba Effect
Video: Freezing hot water in the air

mpemba effect user image 2020A magnificent sight of the Mpemba Effect captured on camera by Torsten Brehme from Harzgerode, Germany last year.

This beautiful sight is what happens when boiling hot water meets bitterly cold air. It is known as the Mpemba Effect.

The Mpemba Effect is the name given to the observation that hot liquid freezes faster than cold under similar conditions. It is achieved by throwing hot water into the cold air often overhead creating superb photo or video opportunities.

This video of the spectacle is from the town of Schleiz in Germany from February last year when temperatures dropped to a bone-chilling -18C. Isn't it incredible?

If you're in northern parts of Scotland you might just have a chance at getting this to work, but you'll have to be quick because temperatures will be lifting by the weekend!
