The lead-up to Christmas
Meteorologist live on GB News

Strong winds, snow on Christmas Day, there's plenty of weather on the menu in the coming days. Our meteorologist goes live on GB News to discuss more.

On Wednesday 20th December, meteorologist Tamsin Green went live on GB News with Eamonn Holmes and Ellie Costello to discuss prospects of a white Christmas, alongside the weather warnings in place in the lead-up to the big day.

So what weather do we have in store? Well through Wednesday winds will be strengthening, peaking into the early hours of the night and Thursday morning, thanks to Storm Pia as named by the Danish Meteorological Institute.

Very strong winds reaching over 70 mph furthest north.Very strong winds reaching over 70 mph furthest north.

Winds will be strongest across northernmost Scotland, where gusts could reach 70 - 80 mph for the likes of Caithness, Shetland and Orkney in particular.

Strong winds will also affect the rest of Scotland and Northern England, where downwind of high ground, such as the Pennines westerly/north-westerly winds in excess of 50 mph are expected. They may also briefly reach nearer to 70 mph here too.

Large waves are also expected on the Atlantic coast. Wind warnings are in force with a yellow weather warning officially issued by the Met Office, and our own warnings available inside the app for viewing also.

White Christmas?

As for Christmas Day, a white Christmas does indeed look on the cards. A technical white Christmas only requires a single snowflake to fall anywhere in the UK within the 24 hours of December 25th, and that certainly looks likely for north-west Scotland.

Some weather models are even hinting at some more substantial snow accumulations here, though there is uncertainty regarding this.

Away from the north, it looks to be a broadly dry day as high pressure ridges in. It could be another windy day for northern areas too.
