Storms likely to follow
Bathtub temperatures in Mediterranean

Water temperatures in the Mediterranean are at a high for this time of year, great for holidaymakers during the school break, but bad news for the coming months.

Over the next few months, the weather in the Mediterranean will become more volatile and, above all, more thundery. While temperatures in the sea will start to cool from mid-September, cooler air and troughs arriving from autumn will lead to increased instability.

Did you know?

The higher the water temperatures, the more water vapour gets into the air and is available as ‘energy’ for showers and thunderstorms.

The warmer the Mediterranean, the more powerful the thunderstorms will be. Consequently, the likelihood of storms with heavy rain, hail, and squalls also increases.

Menorca — is the storm season starting?

Last week's images from the Balearic Islands may already have been a foretaste of the autumn months ahead.

On Menorca, 150 litres of rain per square metre fell within three hours. Roads turned into raging rivers.

While the warm waters are great for those visiting during the school holidays, they could spell trouble for locals in autumn.
