Storm Antoni arrived on Saturday as the first named storm of the year, delivering flooding and wind damage to southern regions.

Wind gusts reached 78 mph in Berry Head, Devon while Cardinham, Cornwall saw a gust of 56 mph, both provisionally record speeds for August in the counties.

Torrential rainfall throughout the day saw the River Thames burst its banks in some areas of London. Resultant flooding submerged small areas, though there is no widespread damage as a result.

In Dublin, rainfall also produced flooding. Firefighters helped pump water out of an underground car park in Clontarf as the rain eased, which completely submerged vehicles parked within.

Elsewhere, residents in the Castle Court Estate of Dublin were evacuated after floodwater breached homes. One person was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Weather warnings were in place ahead of Antoni’s arrival which delivered 43 mm of rain in Scarborough, accounting for close to half of the monthly average precipitation in August.

Trees were also felled by the strong winds. Storm Antoni is the first named storm in the UK since February 2022 and arrives as the storm season is close to ending.

In addition to the stormy conditions, in the Midlands it was also the coldest August day since 1977.

Coventry saw the highest temperature reading at 13.1°C marking the coolest high for the month in 46 years.
