Winter is a day away but overnight frosts and the first wider snowfall of the season is already creating disruption in some areas.

Wednesday morning opened with widespread frost in the UK after sub-zero temperatures Tuesday night with parts of Yorkshire and eastern Scotland dealt with a dusting of snow. This fell in flurries in places, creating hazardous driving conditions.

By Thursday morning, snow became more widespread. Leading to at least 11 schools in Cornwall and two in Devon, closing or making the decision to open later than usual.

Yellow weather warnings are in force along the eastern UK coastline for snow and ice until 11:00 am this morning while another snow and ice warning in the north of Northern Ireland expired at 10:00 am.

Cornish snow

Cornwall rarely sees snow, with an average of 7.4 snow days a year compared to parts of Scotland which see 40–50 days of snow on average!

An additional yellow warning covers the north-east of Scotland and remains in effect until Friday afternoon.

Cold-health warnings have also been published by the UK Health Security Agency to cover the East and West Midlands with a yellow alert plus an amber alert for the North East, North West, Yorkshire and the Humber.

Up to 5 cm of snow fell in the Yorkshire Moors by Wednesday morning, leading to some reports of stranded drivers. Thursday morning saw a wider, lighter dusting of snowfall in many areas across the country from Scotland down to Cornwall and Bournemouth.

Snow has mostly settled in eastern Scotland and the North East of England, both areas will continue to see snowy showers with freezing temperatures continuing for the coming days.

Responsible for the cold snap is an area of cold air which has arrived over the UK from northern Scandinavia. It will ensure temperatures remain around freezing even into the start of next week.
