A major heatwave has spread across south-Western Europe. At the start of the week, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees in large parts of Spain, France, and Portugal.

On Monday, the thermometer showed peak temperatures of over 40 degrees in many places. In France, it was hottest in Le Montat, north of Toulouse, with 42.9 degrees. In Mérida, Spain, temperatures even reached 43.8 degrees.

The heatwave will continue over the next few days. While temperatures will only exceed 40 degrees locally in France and Portugal, this will be the case in many parts of Spain.
