Is there any truth to the snow stories?

Rumours are flying that significant snow is on the way to the UK and Ireland, but is there any truth to it?

After days of dreary, anticyclonic gloom, we have a cleaner high pressure back in the driver's seat and it's set to turn colder.

While stubborn cloud was previously trapped under the high, we're finally seeing clearer and bluer skies. But with less cloud around, also comes a greater frost risk, so the night-times and early mornings will certainly start to feel colder.

However it's this weekend that the colder weather really gets going as arctic air spreads in from the north.

With the cold weather comes a greater risk of wintry showers and snow, mainly just to the hills of northern Scotland at first.

However, there is also a small risk of something more substantial moving in through next week, albeit with very low confidence. There is currently very little agreement across weather models.

If a low pressure system pushes in and brings more moist weather from the west, interacting with the colder air is still in pace, then there is the risk of some more substantial snowfall further south.

The risk of this is very small for now and is still over a week away, so the detail is very likely to change. We'll be sure to keep you updated on the latest inside the app!
