Inside Hurricane Ian
Live report from Fort Myers

Meteorologist Federico Di Catarina, over in our USA team has been reporting live from several locations in Florida, assessing the damage from Hurricane Ian.

Several homes, buildings and streets have been left covered in knee-deep floodwater, or swept out to sea, as result of intense rainfall and a towering storm surge. Some of the worse impacts have been felt in Fort Myers, one of the places where Federico has been reporting from.

People are struggling to deal with the aftermath of Ian, with lives and homes entirely uprooted, including smashed cars and boats hurled inland, plus debris covering the streets.

A few miles elsewhere, a chunk of the main road connecting Sanibel Island to Florida's mainland had fallen into the sea, cutting off access to the barrier island where 6,300 people live.

The current death toll stands at fourteen across Florida, though this figure is expected to rise further, with Hurricane Ian also continuing to barrel towards the Carolinas.
