In the Gulf of Mexico: Cloud streets seen on the WeatherRadar

In the Gulf of Mexico
Cloud streets seen on the WeatherRadar

Our WeatherRadar showed an incredible view last Wednesday as rows of clouds lined up over the Gulf of Mexico. They are called cloud streets and this is how they form.

It was a beautiful sight on the WeatherRadar, long rows of clouds called cloud streets blossomed over the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday.

Cloud streets form when cold air moves over warmer water or land, picking up moisture and heat. As this warm, moist air rises, it cools and condenses, forming cumulus clouds.

If the atmospheric conditions are right and there's a stable layer of air above, the rising air can create parallel cylinders of circulating air.

These cylinders align with the direction of the prevailing wind, resulting in the formation of these long rows of cumulus clouds known as cloud streets or horizontal convective rolls.

Cloud streets Wednesday

Cloud streets are often seen over bodies of water, such as lakes or oceans, when cold air blows over the warmer water and produces this distinctive cloud pattern.

Pilots and meteorologists frequently observe cloud streets as indicators of the direction and speed of the wind at higher altitudes, which can be crucial for weather forecasting and understanding atmospheric conditions.
