Impacting earthquake zone
Floods, ice, and tornado hit Turkey

Severe storms claimed several lives in the Turkish earthquake zone last week, as flash floods and even a tornado impacted the country.

Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hailstorms have caused extensive damage in southeastern Turkey. Several people were killed and others injured while emergency forces continued to search for missing persons.

After last week's heavy rains, masses of water rushed through the streets and collapsed houses. They swept away several cars, as can be seen in the video above.

Tornado at close range

A tornado raged near the town of Pazarcik, about 250 kilometres east of Adana. It covered roofs, overturned containers and damaged houses. The video below shows debris flying through the air.

A storm in the region of Kahramanmaras, which was heavily damaged by the earthquakes, hit mainly people in tents and living containers. At least 170 tents were damaged.

After a hailstorm, Adana looked like winter. Grains of ice piled up in the streets of the city of over a million inhabitants:

From Wednesday to Friday, heavy thunderstorms raged repeatedly in the south of the country, especially in the Anatolia region, causing flooding.

A week earlier, the very region of the earthquake disaster had already been hit by storms. In places, more than 50 litres of rain per square metre fell in just 24 hours, in some places even more than 80 litres.

After the devastating earthquake on February 6th, which killed more than 57,000 people, many people in the region are living in emergency shelters. As recently as mid-March, heavy rainfall in the region led to flooding that killed at least 18 people.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms will continue to hit the region until Friday. Flooding is expected.
