Tropical Storm Debby
Historic rainfall in Charleston

Debby has slowed down and is bringing historic rainfall to parts of the Southeast US, breaking rainfall records.

Across parts of Georgia and South Carolina, significant amounts of rainfall have been recorded within the space of just a few days as Tropical Storm Debby almost stalls and moves at an extremely slow pace of around 3 mph.

Weather & Radar reporter Jonathan Petramala is on the ground in the US providing live updates and footage of the impacts, as seen above.

Record rainfall amounts

3.56 inches (90.4 mm) of rain fell in 24 hours in Charleston.

The record daily rainfall was broken on Tuesday 6th August in Downtown Charleston, with 3.56 inches breaking the previous record of 3.46 inches from 1922, as confirmed by the local National Weather Service.

Charleston has received over 300 mm of rainfall (up to a foot) in just three days and will continue to see these amounts rise. Significant flooding is ongoing across the region, and a curfew is in place across the city according to the mayor.

Other areas such as Savannah, Georgia have seen similar totals of over 230 mm. Several communities across these south-eastern states have been submerged in the deluge of rain, with at least six known fatalities so far.
