Florida's cold snap
It's raining iguanas!

The weather is turning so cold in Florida, that iguanas could drop out of trees! But don't worry they're not dead, they're just chilling.

A rather unusual weather warning recently, when the National Weather Service in Miami-South Florida warned that iguanas could fall out of trees.

This is because of the cold weather that Florida is due to be experiencing, and with iguanas being cold-blooded, they slow down and can become immobile, generally when temperatures fall below 9C.

They consequently lose their ability to cling on into the trees, which is why they drop out of them. Despite this, they do remain alive as their main body functions continue to work, and will then thaw out once temperatures rise.

However cold weather is still extremely life-threatening for the iguanas, as they originate from far warmer climes in Central and South America. In 2010, a severe cold snap wiped out large numbers of them.

Colder conditions are expected to sweep across the state, and the rest of the US, just in time for Christmas, where temperatures might only just reach the mid-teens in Miami, 20 degrees lower than normal in some parts.
