Florida braces for arrival of Helene

Preparations are continuing ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Helene in Florida later tonight.

Evacuations are underway in an area of Florida known as the Big Bend, with Helene still intensifying in the Gulf of Mexico, packing sustained winds of 110 mph.

The system could reach category 4 strength before making landfall, delivering a powerful storm surge and widespread dangerous winds across the south-east US state.

On Wednesday, Helene impacted Mexico, with flooding reported in Cancún. The hurricane has continued to strengthen since then.

Currently at category 2 strength, the system is undergoing rapid intensification, fuelled by temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico.

The current path, and movement speed, of Helene suggests the system will travel north into Georgia and possibly South Carolina before dissipating.

We will have updates from our reporter in the United States on the initial impacts tomorrow, track the system yourself on the WindRadar.
