The first significant snow of the season brought up to 12cm in some places, leading to tricky driving conditions for many.

Many parts of Britain got their first taste of winter as a band of sleet and snow swept across Wales, northern and central England overnight and on Tuesday morning, with some places seeing up to 12 centimeters of snow for a time.

Commuters faced difficult driving conditions due to snow and ice whilst some train services in Scotland, northern England and Wales have been delayed because of the wintry conditions.

Hundreds of schools have been closed, mainly in Wales and the West Midlands as a result of the snow and ice.

Meanwhile, parts of Scotland saw a severe frost as the thermometer plummeted to -11.2C at Braemar in Aberdeenshire. This was the coldest night this early in the season since November 1998 when -10.9C was recorded.

While some more sleet and snow is likely, road conditions are expected to improve for a time on Tuesday as temperatures rise a little in the afternoon, though ice may become an issue later this evening.

Be sure the check the radar to see if you may still be affected by wintry precipitation.
