Up to 47°C - Sweltering heat in Sardinia

Up to 47°C
Sweltering heat in Sardinia

The heat in Sardinia has reached extreme highs in recent days, as seen on the TemperatureRadar.

In Europe, the worst of the heatwave has shifted from Spain to southern Italy over the past few days with parts of Sardinia reaching unbearable highs.

For inner Sardinia especially, temperatures are hitting 45°C, and even higher locally at just over 47°C.

It gets even hotter...

The all-time record for Sardinia is 48.2°C (July 2023). The European record of 48.8°C was set in Sicily in the summer of 2021.

Although the thermometer often read just under 40 degrees on the coast in recent days, extreme humidity means it is not any more tolerable.

The situation is similar in Sicily, although temperatures did not quite reach the same highs as in Sardinia. Tunisia, on the other hand, took it a step further as temperatures soared to a scorching 49°C in places.

It will remain very hot in the southern Mediterranean over the next few days. However, the worst of the heat is now in the rear-view for the region.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
