Weekend outlook
Wet and windy Sunday after cold start

A brief lull from the week's gales arrives on Saturday, but temperatures are dropping and bringing a return of wintry conditions.

In the UK, a frosty start is expected this weekend, as lows drop to around freezing overnight from Friday. Highs eventually reach double-digits in southern to eastern England, slightly below elsewhere.

Otherwise, scattered showers are the theme of the day, potentially turning wintry with sleet and snow over higher altitudes of Scotland and northern England.

It's a similar outlook in Ireland, with showers moving through during the day eastwards as cloud builds to the west behind them. A frosty start here too with lows at just 1 °C to the north and south of the country.

By Sunday, heavier downpours return to both countries from the north-west. First impacting Ireland and Scotland as it continues to shift south-east.

Temperatures are broadly in line with Saturday, slightly warmer for Ireland with temperatures reaching double digits.

Strong, gusting winds return on Sunday thanks to another low-pressure system passing by. Strongest gusts are felt around coastal Ireland, up to 50 mph (80 km/h) for Galway and Dublin, though stronger gusts are possible in more exposed coastal areas such as Belmullet and Clifden.

In the UK, areas around the Irish Sea feel similar force, up to 45 mph in Liverpool with gusts more broadly in the 30 to 40 mph range across the UK.

These ease slightly but remain a factor on Monday as we start the new week.
