The situation regarding the wildfires in France and Spain is becoming increasingly dire.

At Cap Ferret, near Bordeaux, two fierce fires raged during the night leading up to Friday and could not be brought under control.

Just under 30,000 people had to be evacuated from campsites and holiday resorts in particular in this region, which is popular with tourists.

In Spain, the government has declared a national state of emergency for the first time ever, following the devastating fires affecting the Madrid metropolitan area and the neighbouring province of Ávila.

A fire near La Mierla, north-east of Madrid, has burned 32,000 hectares of land since last week. This is one of the largest fires in Spanish history.

The weather conditions remain unfavourable. Temperatures are high, it is still dry, and, particularly in Spain, there are strong winds.
