The summer solstice is the day in which the sun is strongest, and is also a day when the UV Index is set to be high.

The UV Index on Thursday 20th June is forecast to reach high levels of around 6 or 7, and sun cream is a must.

The best of the blue skies and sunshine will prevail across England and Wales, while Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland will be cloaked under a blanket of cloud, with lower UV levels predicted here. Cooler and cloudier across the eastern coast of south-east England too.

Even on a cloudy day though, UV levels can still be high in summer, with UV able to be reflected and scattered in the clouds. On Thursday 20th, the UV levels across the likes of Dublin, Belfast and Glasgow are only expected to reach low or moderate levels.
