A week after Khanun
Japan: Tropical Storm Lan makes landfall

Tropical Storm Lan's path and forecast. Times shown in BST.

Tropical Storm Lan made landfall in Japan early Tuesday morning, impacting the Wakayama prefecture, just a week after Typhoon Khanun.

More than 240,000 people were evacuated prior to Lan’s arrival which is delivering a deluge of heavy rainfall and strong winds to central and western Japan.

Utility companies say an estimated 90,000 households have lost power due to supply issues as the grid is being hit by Lan’s sustained wind speeds of 93 mph.

Earlier this week, Lan reached typhoon strength in the Pacific but weakened before making landfall.

The system eventually made landfall at 05:00 am local time with some areas expecting to receive up to 35 cm of rainfall by Wednesday.

Lan is a slow-moving system, travelling northwest at a rate of 9 mph. Around 900 flights have been cancelled, many of which were to serve Osaka which is currently feeling the impact of the system.

From Wednesday, Lan will begin to move north. Travelling via the Sea of Japan while delivering strong gales to northern Japan and the far-east of Russia.

Last week, southern areas of Japan felt the impact of Typhoon Khanun as it travelled towards the Korean Peninsula. Fortunately, there is only a small overlap for the two systems.
