Weekend weather
A warm but thundery start to autumn

High pressure in charge on Saturday 31st August.

Over the weekend we'll see summer end and autumn begin. So how is it looking?

High pressure will remained centred over the UK and Ireland on Saturday, though it will be swiftly scooting away on Sunday as we transition into the autumn period.

Broadly dry to end August

Saturday will see widespread fine and dry conditions, with plenty of sunny spells through the day, though some patchy cloud filling in too.

Feeling fresh too with temperatures only reaching highs of 22°C, perhaps locally 23°C.

The exception to the dry conditions being the south-west of England where some sharp showers or even thunderstorms may edge in, predominantly to Cornwall and Devon through the afternoon.

Later in the night however, the risk of thunderstorms extends more widely across southern England as they push up from northern France, continuing into Sunday morning.

Split to start autumn

While high pressure scoots away into Sunday, warm and humid air will be driving up from the south with temperatures rising into the high-twenties in the south-east. 27°C is expected for London, with 28°C in Guildford.

The warm, humid southerly air will be bringing the thunderstorm risk to southern areas, perhaps tracking further north into central parts of England through the day.

Meanwhile, out to the west, a frontal band of rain will push into Ireland, with fresher conditions here.

Further showery spells of rain are then expected more widely across the UK as the day wears on, continuing into the night.
