Ireland's new challenge - Switch from drought to waterlogged

Ireland's new challenge
Switch from drought to waterlogged

Weather map showing widespread heavy rain across Ireland, with temperatures near 14°C in Galway and Cork and 15°C in Dublin and Belfast.
Heavy rain returned to Ireland over the past week, bringing fresh problems.

There's been a sudden twist in conditions over Ireland, and the shift from near-drought to heavy rain is too much to handle for some areas.

New figures show rainfall totals over Leinster, east Ulster, and parts of Munster are now above average with the past week seeing rainfall amounts 124% to 312% of average.

In south Leister, Oak Park, Co. Carlow recorded 57 mm of rain in a week. The result is soil that is now saturated, or close to it, while some areas with poor drainage are seeing waterlogged fields, impacting farmers.

Looking at the positives, it moves the country further away from the drought status that plagued the summer season.

Over the next week, conditions will be generally drier though showers remain a factor, heavy at times while moving through the country.

Whether you rely on the land for farming, or just for a nice country walk, keep an eye on conditions on the WeatherRadar.
